You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know about
the usefulness of big Web sites such as Yahoo!, Excite
or Netscape. But some of the most interesting and useful
sites rarely get much publicity. What are some of these
lesser-known gems? To find out, we asked a dozen heavy
Net users, ranging from an on-line privacy expert to a
soccer star: Where do you spend your spare time on-line?

[Web Surfing Illustration] Sure, our experts responded
                           with some of the usual
suspects -- news sites such as MSNBC and CNN, sports
giants like ESPN.com and CBS Sportsline, and major
"portal" sites such as Lycos. But when we filtered out
the familiar names, we were left with an intriguing and
eclectic assortment of Web sites (who knew there was a
site dedicated to Tibetan sand painting?). What follows
are our picks from their picks.

The Internet is no longer just for techies. These days,
Web demographics aren't too different from the
demographics of mainstream America, and cyberspace
content -- which targets everyone from grandfathers to
soccer moms -- reflects that. Still, there are plenty of
sites that cater to the wired crowd, and our panelists
gave us their favorites.

One of the most useful sites recommended is PalmCentral,
a haven for owners of the PalmPilot personal digital
assistant. This site, which is run voluntarily by a
PalmPilot devotee, has thousands of programs PalmPilot
users can download for everything from games to
navigation and mapping.
